The Calloway County Conversation District held its annual Awards Banquet on March 18th and recognized numerous Lakers from around the district.
In the art contest, Alina Pugh (East), Ella Osborne (Southwest), and Alina Marquardt (North) were named school winners.
CCHS student Emerson Herndon and CCMS student Leah Hughes were the school writing award winners.
CCMS teacher Scott Pile was given a Conservation District Honor Award for his work in conversation education in his science classroom.
Students from the Health Occupations Students of America chapter of the Murray-Calloway County Area Technology Center recently competed at the HOSA State Conference in Louisville. The team qualified to advance to the International Leadership Conference in Nashville, TN this summer.
At the conference, Audrey Tabers (CCHS) and Payton Dawson (MHS) placed second in the state for their independent events. Other HOSA members who competed were Aiden Marr from MHS and Cheyenne Hardy, Lydia Blankenship, Kelsey Spears, Cindy Damian Figueroa, and Sophia Hernandez Acuna from CCHS.
Calloway County High School art students (L to R) Isabella Rodriguez, Lucy King, Isabella Brawner, Emma Martin, and Zuri Conner recently had their artwork accepted into the Pennyrile/Purchase Regional Art Exhibition. The students had a total of eight pieces accepted into the exhibition.
Martin's piece won first place in printmaking and will move on to the All-State competition at the UK School of Art & Visual Studies in April. King earned third place in photography.
Calloway County High School senior Sam Rudy has been named the March Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Murray.
Rudy holds a perfect 4.0 grade point average and is on track to be a valedictorian upon graduation in May. Rudy also scored a 30 composite score on The ACT Test. He has been named Student of the Month at CCHS twice during his time there, in addition to this Rotary honor.
Rudy is a standout student in the CCHS Laker Band. This year, he was recommended for KMEA All-State Band and has been selected for All-District Band three times. He plays numerous instruments, including the bass guitar for a praise band at his church.
Outside the classroom, Rudy is an active member of the school’s National Honor Society and Educators Rising. He is also a member of this year’s Leadership Tomorrow class. He has also been a member of the school’s chess team. He also works part time at both Dairy Queen and Sweet Dots.
After high school, Rudy plans to attend Murray State to major in music education to become a school band director.
Sam is the son of Jeff and Carrie Rudy.
Calloway County High School's Academic Team capped off a successful season finishing in a tie for 14th overall at the KAAC Governor’s Cup State Tournament held in Louisville, KY March 14-17, 2025. The Lakers advanced 21 students to the state tournament, where they competed against more than 2200 students statewide. CCHS advanced a student in every event for the third consecutive year. The Lakers were recognized for their efforts in both team and individual events.
The Laker Quick Recall team advanced to the Sweet 16 after winning the district and regional tournaments earlier in the year. They defeated Marion County HS 44-7, Glasgow 35-28, before taking a loss to eventual Quick Recall state champions Russell High School 35-28. In the fourth round, they took another loss to quarterfinalist Owensboro 38-28 before defeating Trinity (Louisville) 28-25 to secure a spot in the Sweet 16. The Lakers were defeated by 4th place Paul G. Blazer (Ashland) 51-30 to end their season. The Lakers were led by captain Nathaniel Fowler, Aubrey Naber, Connor Pile, Amber Wu, and assisted by Sean Williams, Kaylee Tharp, Addi Pervine, Maya Munoz, Aiden Hooper, Jack Williams, Max Chapman, Levi Dunnaway, and Ezra Foote.
In Individual Quick Recall, Nathaniel Fowler advanced to round 6 and finished just shy of top 10 in the state. Addison Pervine, Jack Williams, and Levi Dunnaway advanced to the 4th round, while Max Chapman advanced to the second round.
The Laker Future Problem Solving Team broke the top 10, earning a 7th place finish for their work identifying problems and providing an actionable plan to issues surrounding nanotechnology. Brooklyn Swatzell, Aubrey Naber, Vayla Carlisle, and Madison Morris competed on this team, which has consistently placed in the top 10 in the state, earning a state championship in 2022.

Calloway County High School's speech team competed in the KHSSL State Championships on March 8th at Western Kentucky University.
The team had three semi-finalists placing them in the top 12 in the state, including Elizabeth Lanier in Impromptu, Sarah Gardner in Poetry, and Addy Lusk in Extemporaneous.
The team also had four entries compete as quarterfinalists placing them in the top 24 in the state. Quarterfinalists include Levi Dunnaway in Broadcasting, Elizabeth Lanier in Extemporaneous, Brilee Garland in Poetry, and the Improvisational Duo team of Levi Dunnaway and Brilee Garland.
Calloway County High School's FFA recently excelled in competitive FFA Record Keeping Projects. The Lakers had 32 entries, the most of any chapter in the region and won 12 Regional Championships, the most in the region. Thirteen entries were named regional runners up.
Junior Abbigail Hathcock being elected as Regional Secretary. Senior Jacee McKeel was selected as a State Officer Candidate. McKeel along with senior Ellie Falwell were named Finalists for Stars in Production and Ag Business, respectively. Five other seniors were approved for the State FFA Degree to be awarded this summer at the State FFA Convention.

Calloway County High School agriculture teacher Jacob Falwell has received the Purchase Region Golden Owl Award. The award recognizes Kentucky ag educators for their tremendous contributions in preparing the next generation of young people for successful careers in ag. The award is presented by Nationwide, the Kentucky FFA Foundation, and the Kentucky Association of Agricultural Educators.
In the award’s first year, the Golden Owl Award recognized outstanding ag educators in 2 states: Iowa and Ohio. Now, seven years later, this award recognizes an Ag Educator of the Year in 13 states. This is Kentucky’s first year being a Golden Owl Partner.
Falwell is now a finalist for Kentucky Agriculture Educator of the Year, awarded at the Kentucky FFA State Convention in June. Finalists in each state receive $500 and a plaque. The state winner receives an additional $3,000 and the coveted Ag Educator of the Year trophy.
Calloway County High School's boys' basketball team won the Region 1 Championship on March 9th after their 73-56 victory over Marshall County at the CFSB Center on the campus of Murray State University.
The Lakers are now 31-3 and have won the 2A state championship this season.
The Lakers will play on Wednesday, March 26th at Rupp Arena in Lexington at 8:30e/7:30c against the Region 16 champion.
Calloway County High School's Future Business Leaders of America competed at the Region 1 Leadership Conference at Murray State on February 24th. The CCHS FBLA chapter boasts 110 members, the largest chapter in Region 1.
The chapter was awarded the Silver Award for Local Leadership Challenge.
Numerous students earned individual honors. Ezra Foote was named the Region 1 Who's Who recipient.

Calloway County High School senior Eli Finley has been named the February Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Murray.
Finley has achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average at CCHS and is on track to be a valedictorian in May. He also earned a 32 composite score on The ACT Test. During high school, he has been named Most Outstanding Student in Honors English 1 and Honors English 2. He is a 3-time recipient of the Academic All-State Basketball Award. He is on track to complete a business pathway and is certified in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Upon graduation, he will have earned college credit in four dual credit classes.
Outside the classroom, Finley is a standout on the CCHS basketball team. He is the school’s all-time leading scorer and led the Lakers to the 2A State Championship as a senior. He is currently the Senior Class Reporter for the Student Council, the Head of Attendance Chair for FBLA, a selected member of Leadership Tomorrow, a member of Lakers for Christ, and a member of the Pep Club.
Finley has spent time volunteering in the community with his church, FBLA, and REAL little league basketball.
After high school, Finley is undecided of which college he will attend, but plans to play college basketball in addition to furthering his education. He hopes to attend graduate school to one day become an attorney in Kentucky.
Eli is the son of John and Jennifer Finley.
Calloway County High School's girls track team finished second overall at the KHSAA State 2A Indoor Championships in Louisville on March 4th. The Lakers finished with 89.5 points, behind only Lexington Catholic's 101 points and ahead of 24 other teams in the state.
Layla Green placed first in the high jump and was runner-up in the 55-meter hurdles.
Hayden Loveless won first in the 200-meter dash and was runner-up in the 55 meter dash.
The 4x200 team also placed first, consisting of Green, Loveless, Anna Marie Arnett and Lexi McClure.
Calloway County High School's academic team has qualified for the KAAC Governor's Cup State Finals after finishing second overall in the regional competition on February 24th at McCracken County High School in Paducah. The Lakers finished with 41 points total, just one point behind regional champion McCracken County.
The Quick Recall team, the Future Problem Solving Team, and numerous individuals have qualified for the KAAC State Finals held at The Galt House in Louisville March 14th-17th.
The Quick Recall team was named regional champions after going undefeated in their four rounds of competition. The Laker Quick Recall team is led by captain Nathaniel Fowler, Aubrey Naber, Connor Pile, Amber Wu, Sean Williams, Kaylee Tharp, Jack Williams, Ezra Foote, Levi Dunnaway, Maya Munoz, Max Chapman, and Aiden Hooper.
The Future Problem Solving team of Brooklyn Swatzell, Aubrey Naber, Vayla Carlisle, and Madison Morris earned second place for their booklet on Agricultural Industry.
In Arts and Humanities, Maya Munoz finished second and Nathaniel Fowler placed third.
In Language Arts, Aubrey Naber placed third and Kaylee Tharp finished fifth.
In Math, Amber Wu placed first and Sean Williams took fifth.
In Composition, Vayla Carlisle finished third, and in Science, Aiden Hooper placed fifth.
In Social Studies, Ezra Foote placed second and Nathaniel Fowler took third.

Calloway County High School students attended Murray State University’s School of Engineering E-Day on February 28th. Numerous CCHS students competed among the 700 students from 26 high schools from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Illinois.
Numerous CCHS students were honored for their work during the competitions. Taylor Couples, Gavin Luffman, Gavin Duncan, and Spencer Douglas took home second place in STEM Guitar and third in Creativity. Alex Robertson, Tyler Saalwaechter, Miles Edwards, and Matthew Williams finished third in the Robot Challenge. Aiden Hooper took second place in CAD design.
Calloway County High School senior Brooklyn Swatzell has been awarded the Presidential Fellowship scholarship from Murray State University. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, on-campus housing, and a meal plan. In order for the fellowship to be renewed yearly, recipients must maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA, full-time status, participate in the Honors College, and participate in research in the appropriate academic discipline.
Swatzell is a standout student at CCHS and is on track to graduate in May as a valedictorian with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She is the president of the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. She is also a 2024 graduate of the Commonwealth Honors Academy at Murray State University. At CCHS, Swatzell has taken eight different dual credit college classes in preparation for her time at MSU.
Outside of the classroom, Swatzell is active in the school’s academic team, Future Business Leaders of America, Lakers for Christ, Unified Champion Schools, Student Council, BETA Club, Prom Committee, and Leadership Tomorrow. She has also previously participated in Health Occupations Students of America and the Laker tennis team. She has won numerous awards in local, regional, and state competitions.
In the community, Swatzell volunteers on behalf of her extracurricular clubs at CCHS. She also worked part time at Dairy Queen and as a babysitter.
At Murray State, she plans to major in exercise science to become an occupational therapist.
Brooklyn is the daughter of Chris Swatzell and Angela Thomas.
Calloway County High School has hired Coby Lewis as the Lakers' new head football coach.
Lewis comes to CCHS from Paducah Tilghman High School, where he served as the offensive coordinator for the 2024 state championship team. Over the past two seasons, Tilghman has averaged a state leading 47.5 points per game.
“I am super excited to get going," said Lewis. "I can’t wait to experience Friday nights under the lights at Jack D. Rose Stadium.”
"Coach Lewis brings a high level of excitement and passion to our program, and we look forward to a bright future," says CCHS principal Steve Smith.
CCHS will make an official introduction to players, parents and staff on Thursday, February 27th at 3:30 pm in the CCHS Media Center.
Calloway County High School's wrestling team qualified three competitors for the KHSAA State Wrestling Championships held February 27th through March 1st in Lexington. The Lakers qualified during regional competition on February 22nd at Paducah Tilghman High School.
Christian McIntosh finished third in the region in the 175 pound class. Lane Parrish finished third in the region in the 190 pound class. Josh Frost finished fourth in the region in the 215 pound class.
Calloway County High School senior Elizabeth Lanier has scored a perfect 36 composite score on The ACT Test. The ACT Test is a nationwide college entrance test given to college-bound high school students. One quarter of one percent of test takers achieve this incredible score on The ACT Test.
Lanier is enrolled in The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science at Western Kentucky University. At WKU, Lanier has completed her junior and senior years of high school in an on-campus two-year course of study. Upon graduation from CCHS in May, she will have earned 60 college credit hours.
“Calloway County Schools has given me so many opportunities to do what I love, while also fostering a passion for learning,” said Lanier. “Every teacher that I had pushed me to be the best I can be, while also encouraging me to be a good and kind member of our community, and I am so blessed to be a Laker.”
Lanier was named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist as a senior.
Lanier is still an active member of clubs and teams at CCHS. As a CCHS student, Lanier has earned numerous awards as a member of the Speech Team, Academic Team, Future Farmers of America, and Future Business Leaders of America.
In the summer of 2024, Lanier spent nearly two months in Kazakhstan as a part of a language immersion scholarship from the U.S. Department of State. She spent her time there learning to speak Russian.
Upon graduation from CCHS and The Gatton Academy in May, Lanier is undecided on her choice of university, but plans to study International Relations and the Russian language.
Elizabeth is the daughter of Alan and Catherine Lanier.
Calloway County High School was named the overall champions at the 2025 Math Day competition held at Murray State University on February 5th.
In the upper division for juniors and seniors, Gary Rogers placed first overall and won a $1500 scholarship. Jack Williams finished second and won a $1000 scholarship. Connor Pile finished third and won a $1000 scholarship. Prem Patel also won a $500 scholarship for his performance.
In the lower division for freshmen and sophomores, Ava Bogard finished first overall. Sean Williams placed second, Devine Ezinma finished third, and Mason Riley came in fourth.
In team competition, the team of Connor Pile, Mason Riley, Gary Rogers, and Sean Williams finished third overall.
Calloway County High School senior Stephen Newton has been recognized as the January Area Technology Center Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Murray.
Newton is a standout in the welding classes at ATC. Upon graduation, he will have completed six welding classes during his time in high school. He also has taken multiple machine tool classes at ATC. He has competed in SkillsUSA welding competitions and will compete at the KWI Bluegrass Welding Series at ATC in February. Newton holds a cumulative 3.6 grade point average during high school.
ATC principal Dan Hicks admires Newton’s work ethic and honesty.
“He is always busy in the shop and often asks, ‘Is there anything I can help with?,” stated Hicks. “I feel certain he will be successful in whatever career he chooses.”
Outside of the classroom, Newton works on his family’s farm and has also worked part time for another independent welder. He is also on the CCHS trap shooting team.
After graduating in May, Newton plans to attend the Kentucky Welding Institute in Flemingsburg, hoping to pursue a welding career working on pipelines.
Stephen is the son of Steve and Sarah Newton.
Calloway County High School's speech team placed third at the Kentucky High School Speech League Regional Tournament on February 1st. The team will compete at the KHSSL state tournament on the campus of Western Kentucky University in March.
Senior Elizabeth Lanier was the regional runner-up in impromptu speaking. Junior Quinlyn Moore was regional runner-up in prose and the freshmen duo interpretation team of Wyatt Humphrey and Tyler Saalwaechter were also regional runners-up.
Calloway County High School's academic team took first place in the KAAC Governor's Cup District competition held at Graves County High School on January 25th. The team has now won the district championship fifteen consecutive times. The Lakers took first place with 67 points, Murray High School earned second place with 25 points, Graves County High School took third with 24 points, and Mayfield rounded out the top four with 4 points.
The Laker Quick Recall team went undefeated in the double-elimination portion of the competition, defeating Graves 34-29 in round 1 and Murray 34-29 in round 2. After a bye in Round 3, the Lakers finished the day defeating Murray 30-27 in Round 4. The Laker Quick Recall Team was led by Connor Pile, captain, Aubrey Naber, Amber Wu, Ezra Foote, Maya Munoz, Sean Williams, Kaylee Tharp, Addi Pervine, Levi Dunnaway, Jack Williams, and Max Chapman. The Laker QR team will advance to Regionals.
The Laker Future Problem Solving Team took first place, earning straight ones from their evaluators as they proposed challenges and solutions related to rising sea levels. The team of Brooklyn Swatzell, Aubrey Naber, Vayla Carlisle, and Madison Morris will advance to Regionals.
In individual events, the Lakers had multiple students place in the top five of content assessment testing and advance to Regionals.
In Language Arts, Aubrey Naber placed first with a perfect score and also ranked first state-wide. Kaylee Tharp finished third, and Ella Martin finished fourth.
In Mathematics, Amber Wu took first, Sean Williams finished second, and Elizabeth Lanier placed third. In Science, Connor Pile was second and Aiden Hooper was fourth. In Social Studies, Ezra Foote finished first, Nathaniel Fowler took second, and Molly Kate Pierce placed fourth.
In Arts and Humanities, Maya Munoz took first, Connor Pile placed third, and Nathaniel Fowler finished in fourth. In Composition, Vayla Carlisle finished third and Mason Riley place fifth.
The team now moves on to the regional competition in hopes of earning a spot in the state Governor's Cup finals.

Calloway County High School freshman Delayna Adams has been recognized as the January Area Technology Center Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Murray.
Adams was nominated by her welding teacher at ATC, Tony Adair.
“Her positive attitude is something I wish every student had,” Adair said. “Her work ethic is great. She is very detailed whether it be in the classroom or the shop. Her attendance is excellent. During our recent welding competition, she placed second as a first year welder. She is always willing to help other students if they need a helping hand. I feel certain she will reach her goals whatever they might be.”
Adams is also in a machine tool class at ATC and is on the honor roll at CCHS. She is on the CCHS archery team and was named an “Academic Archer.” She is also a member of SkillsUSA at ATC.
Adams also volunteers at her church in the nursery and in Sunday School classes.
She plans to continue taking welding classes at ATC. She hopes to attend Kentucky Welding Institute after she graduates high school and wants to pursue welding as her career.
Delayna is the daughter of Jason and Danyelle Adams.
Calloway County High School's Academic Team finished first overall in the WKAA President's Cup Tournament held on the campus of MSU-Paducah on January 17th. Rounding out the top four places were 2nd place McCracken County, 3rd place Graves County, and 4th place Murray High.
Both Laker varsity and junior varsity teams competed as two of fifteen area teams in the competition. Other schools participating included Ballard Memorial High School, Crittenden County High School, Graves County High School, Marshall County High School, Mayfield High School, McCracken County High School, Murray High School, and Paducah Tilghman High School.
The Varsity Quick Recall team earned first place in the tournament, defeating Ballard A 18-0, Murray High 16-15, and Ballard B 31-2. The Lakers took their only loss of the day to McCracken (14-18) in morning pool play. The Lakers went undefeated in afternoon single elimination play, defeating Graves B 51-0, Crittenden A 46-6, before meeting their own JV team in the semi-finals. Calloway Varsity defeated Calloway JV 38-19, advancing to the finals, where they defeated Murray High 30-23. The Varsity team is led by Nathaniel Fowler, captain, Aubrey Naber, Connor Pile, Sean Williams, Kaylee Tharp, Addi Pervine, Max Chapman, Levi Dunnaway, and Jack Williams.
The Junior Varsity Quick Recall team went 2-2 in morning pool play, but battled back to the place 3rd overall, defeating Graves A in the consolation match. The JV team is led by Maya Munoz, Ella Martin, Aiden Hooper, Molly Kate Pierce, and assisted by Hillary Bohannon, Kaiden Capps, Mason Riley, Tyler Sebby, and Tyler Saalwaechter.
In individual written testing the Lakers had multiple students place in the top 10.

Calloway County High School's boys' basketball team has won the 2A State Championship.
The Lakers defeated Harlan County 80-75 in Owensboro on January 19th to win their first ever Kentucky 2A State Championship. The team is now 18-2 this year with 13 games left in the regular season.
